Fort Ouiatenon

16.30 miles away

Fort Ouiatenon was the first European settlement in what is now the state of Indiana. The fort was built in 1717 by the French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. It was named for the Native American tribe that lived in the area. The fort served as a trading post and was a key part of the French fur trade.

In 1763, the Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War and gave control of the fort to the British. The British occupied the fort until 1774 when they were forced to abandon it during the American Revolutionary War. The Americans then occupied the fort until 1779 when it was recaptured by the British. The British held onto the fort until 1783 when it was finally returned to the Americans at the end of the war.

The fort continued to be used as a trading post after the war but its importance declined as settlers began moving into the area. In 1832, most of the buildings at the fort were destroyed by a fire. The site of the fort is now a state park and historical site.
